Meningothelial cells

[Meningothelial cell]

These cells are specialised epithelial cells of the meninges, called also leptomeningeal cells. Meningiomas are primary brain tumors arising from meningothelial cells.

Meningothelial cells are connected via tight junctions, gap junctions, and desmosomes (Weller, 2005; Nabeshima et al, 1975). They play a central role in the maintenance of cerebrospinal fluid homeostasis, form a barrier between the cerebrospinal fluid and neuronal tissue and restrict the passage of cells or substances between the cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissues or cerebrospinal fluid and blood.

Apart from their barrier functions, meningothelial cells play a role in host defence. They are highly active facultative phagocytes and can ingest latex beads, but also Gram-positive and ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
