Apart from the term being a general designation for any activity promoting the growth of mast cells, a specific factor that supports the growth of mast cells (Broxmeyer et al, 1991) is identical with SCF [stem cell factor]. The gene encoding mast cell growth factor is located near the Steel locus and is structurally altered in a number of Steel alleles (Copeland et al, 1990). The gene has been cloned by Anderson et al (1990). Direct evidence for the identity of Mast cell growth factor and SCF comes from an analysis of the Steel-Dickie mutation in the mouse
