abbr. MDF (a term with multiple meanings). Two species of MDF (13 kDa and 66 kDa) have been described. MDF activity is found in the conditioned medium of a number of murine normal and tumor cell lines. It reversibly blocks the enhanced oxygen metabolism induced by IFN-gamma, the production of nitrogen oxides, the capacity to kill intracellular parasites, and the expression of Ia antigens in macrophages and monocytes. Activated macrophages become deactivated (see also: cell activation).
