abbr. Mac2BP, M2BP. This protein has been identified originally as a 90 kDa serum protein in patients with various types of cancers (see: serum protein 90K) (Iacobelli et al, 1988, 1993). The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Koths et al (1993). The encoded protein (585 amino acids) specifically binds the human macrophage-associated lectin Mac-2 (LGALS3). Ullrich et al (1994) have reported that the protein can stimulate NK-cell and LAK cell activities and can induce the secretion of IL2. The protein is identical with galectin-3-binding protein
