These collective terms refer to subsets of T-cells that play a role in innate immunity and adaptive immunity (Rodgers JR and Cook RG, 2005; Sullivan LC et al, 2008). Unlike conventional T-cells, which recognise antigens through classical polymorphic MHC major histocompatibility complex proteins (HLA in humans), MHC class Ib-reactive T-cells react with various antigens presented by class Ib MCH molecules, which are almost monomorphic, i.e. they are usually more or less identical between donors and, therefore, are not restricted to the donor's genetic background. For these reasons MHC class Ib-reactive T-cells are considered to be Unconventional T-cells.
