[Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus ORF4b] this open reading frame in the genome of MERS-CoV [Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus], the causative agent of severe-to-fatal pneumonia, encodes one of several viral accessory proteins. MERS-CoV ORF4b interacts with TBK1 [TANK binding kinase 1] and NFKBIE [I-kappa-B-epsilon], disrupting optimal activation type 1 interferon signalling (Matthews et al, 2014; Yang et al, 2013, 2015). Yang et al (2015) have reported that MERS-CoV ORF4b suppresses the molecular interaction between MAVS and NFKBIE, and inhibits IFN regulatory factor IRF3 phosphorylation and subsequent IFN-beta production.
