The gene encoding this protein has been identified by Vakar-Lopez et al (2004) in a search for proteins involved in metastasis of prostate cancer cells to bone. This bone metastasis-related factor is a secreted isoform of the erbB3 growth factor receptor. The protein is not expressed in epithelial cells of the primary tumor but expressed in epithelial cells of 18/19 lymph node metastases and 23/26 bone metastases). The protein is expressed also in activated osteoblasts in bone metastases and is found also in newly formed bone matrices adjacent to activated osteoblasts.
