The MAX.3 antigen recognized by a monoclonal antibody of the same name has been identified as a macrophage differentiation antigen (Emmrich and Andreesen, 1985). The antigen is expressed also on platelets and megakaryocytes (Andreesen et al, 1986). The antibody preferentially reacts with mature macrophages, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, megakaryocytes, and platelets (Krause et al, 2000). The antigen recognizes a protein of 60-90 kDa and macrophages, and of 58-64 kDa on and platelets, which, in both cases is reduced to 45 kDa after digestion with N-glycosidase F. The cDNA encodes a protein identical with CD84.
