this term is used to describe a kind of cell death primarily associated with, and caused by, the disruption of membranes of lysosomes. The major function of lysosomes and lysosomal proteases is maintenance of cellular homeostasis and possibly differentiation by recycling cellular components. Lysosomes contain over 60 lysosomal hydrolases that are instrumental in degrading organelles and macromolecules delivered to the lysosomal compartment by autophagy, endocytosis, or phagocytosis (Schröder et al, 2010; Luzio et al, 2009).
