These mice (Phillips, 1960) carry a mutation in the GRID2 gene (symbol: Grid2Lc) (Zuo et al, 1997), a glutamate receptor subunit that has been identified as the receptor for cerebellin-1. Lurcher mice constitute a natural model of hereditary olivocerebellar degeneration, characterised by cerebellar ataxia and related motor changes (Porras-García et al, 2005; Hilber and Caston, 2001; Fortier et al, 1987; Cendelin et al, 2010). Semi-dominant heterozygous Lurcher mice suffer from progressive loss of cerebellar Purkinje cells, followed by the death of granule cells and inferior olive neurons
