This heparin-binding protein has been identified by Rubin et al (1991) in the conditioned medium of human embryonic lung fibroblasts. The factor exhibits broad target cell specificity and has been shown to act on mammary and bronchial epithelial cells, keratinocytes, endothelial cells, and melanocytes. Sequence analysis shows that this mitogen is identical with HGF [hepatocyte growth factor], which has been identified independently as scatter factor (Weidner et al, 1991; Rubin et al, 1991).
