Lipopolysaccharide- and beta-1,3-glucan-binding protein

abbr. LGBP. This protein has been isolated and characterized from blood cells (hemocytes) of the freshwater crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus by Lee et al (2000) who also cloned the corresponding cDNA. LGBP has binding activity for lipopolysaccharides and beta-1,3-glucans such as laminarin and curdlan, but does not bind peptidoglycan. LGBP has a structure and functions similar to those of CCF-1 [coelomic cytolytic factor-1] from the earthworm Eisenia foetida. LGBP plays a role in the activation of the prophenoloxidase activating system in crayfish and seems to play an important role in the innate immune system of crayfish.
