This term refers to a process of autophagy (lipid droplet autophagy) involved in the selective degradation of lipid droplets by lysosomes fused with autophagosomes as an alternative pathway to lipolysis of lipids stored in lipid droplets and processed by cytosolic lipases. The process regulates lipid metabolism and contributes to lipolysis by facilitating the breakdown of triglycerides into free fatty acids by acidic lipases. Pharmacological inhibition of macroautophagy or silencing of genes involved in autophagy cause the accumulation of triacylglycerol esters and lipid droplets in serum-starved hepatocytes (Singh R et al, 2009).
