These cells are hematopoietic stem cells with long-term repopulating activity identified by their high activity of the aldehyde dehydrogenase ALDH1 and a lack of hematopoietic lineage markers (Jones et al, 1996; Jone et al, 1009; Lanzkron et al, 1999). These cells have not been tested for the presence of embryonic stem cell markers but are small cells (a fact not mentioned in the original publication but inferred from information of Krause, 2008 from the same group) and may represent a population of so-called small stem cells and probably share several characteristic with VSEL-SC [very small embryonic-like stem cells].
