These specialized neurons are found in segmental ganglia of the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. Leydig neurons are neurosecretory cells (Schmidt and Deitmer, 1996) that are electrically coupled (Keyser et al, 1982) and express myomodulins (Keating and Sahley, 1996). Active Leydig neurons release a myomodulin-like peptide, inducing a K+ conductance increase in glial cell membranes that leads to a glial hyperpolarization (Schmidt and Deitmer, 1999).
