[interstitial cells of Leydig] (a frequently misspelled form is Leyding cells) These cells are morphologically characteristic cells of the testes first described by, and named after, Franz von Leydig. The term interstitial cells is used as a synonym (hence, for example, the term Interstitial cell-stimulating hormone for luteinizing hormone, which stimulates Leydig cells). Leydig cells, together with Sertoli cells, play an important role in the development and maintenance of the male phenotype and establishment of fertility (O'Shaugnessy et al, 2009).
