Laminin-gamma-2 DIII fragment

This fragment of approximately 30 kDa is derived from the laminin-gamma-2 subunit of laminin-5 by proteolytic cleavage with one of the matrix metalloproteinases, MMP-14. The fragment contains EGF-like repeats. The monomeric form is 10 times more sensitive to MMP-14 than the laminin-gamma-2 chain in Laminin-5. The DIII fragment can bind to the EGF receptor and stimulates cell scattering and migration of breast carcinoma cells (Koshikawa et al, 2005). The DIII fragment appears to be generated in vivo, suggesting that it may also increase the metastatic potential of breast carcinoma cells (Schenk et al, 2003).
