this acronym describes the phenotype of the most primitive hematopoietic stem cells that possess the capacity of self-renewal and can give rise to all mature cell types found in the blood. These cells do not express lineage markers, express the stem cell antigen Sca-1, and high levels of the SCF receptor kit (Spangrude et al, 1988; Ikuta and Weissman, 1992). These cells give rise to a multipotential cell type that has lost the capacity of self-renewal, known also as MMP [multipotent myeloid progenitors]. For another definition of these primitive stem cells see also: KTLS cells.
