This cell type is found in the lower small intestine. They are characterized as enteroendocrine cells coexpressing the incretins GLP-1 (produced usually by L cells and GIP [gastric inhibitory peptide] (produced usually by enteroendocrine K cells) (Mortensen et al, 2003; Theodorakis et al, 2006). Speck et al (2011) have reported that the elevation of GLP-1 after duodenal-jejunal bypass correlates with increased numbers of LK cells. Grigoryan M et al (2012) have reported that high levels of the glucagon-like peptides GLP-1 and GLP-2 increase the number of LK cells but do not affect the number of other intestinal epithelial cell types.
