LEAP is an acronym that stands for Large cells that display Episodic release of Amidated Peptides. This term, coined by Park et al (2008) refers to a set of approximately 306 cells in the central nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Amidated peptides are important neuromodulators / neurohormones in insects. Amidation is a specific and critical post-translational modification displayed by the vast majority (90 %) of Drosophila neuropeptides (Hewes et al, 2001; Eipper et al, 1992). In mammals, about 50 % of neuropeptides are amidated (Eipper et al, 1992).
