[LE cell]
The cells were observed originally in bone marrow and described examples of nucleophagocytosis, i.e., the uptake of entire cell nuclei by phagocytes (Hargraves et al, 1948). These cells are found in serous effusions of patients with the collagen disease lupus erythematosus (Naylor, 1992). They are phagocytes (particularly segmented neutrophils) that have phagocytized lysed nuclei from blood cells. These inclusions have no visible chromatin network, which distinguishes them from tart cells, although both cell types are confused with each other.
