[Leydig cell inhibitor] A factor of 21 kDa purified from the culture medium of seminiferous tubules prepared from adult rats that inhibits hCG-stimulated testosterone production by purified Leydig cells (Zwain and Cheng, 1994). LCI also inhibits hCG-stimulated cAMP production by Leydig cells and the forskolin- and cholera toxin-stimulated testosterone and cAMP production but has no apparent effect on the binding of hCG to Luteinizing hormone receptors.
LCI also inhibits the conversion of exogenously added 22R-hydroxycholesterol, pregnenolone, progesterone, and 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone to testosterone. It has no effect on the conversion of dehydroepiandrostenedione and androstenedione to testosterone. LCI is distinct from other known potent
