Kidney growth factor

abbr. KGF (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor was isolated from the blood plasma of heminephrectomised rats (Esbrit et al, 1991). The protein is heat- and trypsin-resistant. It stimulates the DNA synthesis in murine kidneys and kidney cell lines and also stimulates the uptake of sodium by these cells. KGF may be a renotropic protein which can play a key role in the renal compensatory growth after uninephrectomy.
