KSHV orfK13
This protein is encoded by the open reading frame K13 of KSHV. Originally, K13 was thought to be a viral FLICE inhibitory protein (vFLIP) (Thome et al, 1997). However, K13 does not appear to act as an inhibitor of caspase-8 and, therefore, does not behave as a viral FLICE inhibitory protein. K13 has been shown to promote cellular survival, proliferation, transformation, and cytokine secretion by infected cells (Sun et al, 2003, 2006; An et al, 2003; Guasparri et al, 2004).
