This human breast cancer cell line has been established from the malignant pleural effusion of a breast cancer patient with an inflammatory skin metastasis. The cells can be cultured under serum-free conditions.
The cells express erbB1, erbB2 (15-fold overexpressed) and erbB3, and these are autophosphorylated under a serum-supplemented condition. RT-PCR analysis reveals expression of mRNA for all erbB family receptors.
KPL-4 cells are tumorigenic in female athymic nude mice and induce cachexia. The sera of these mice and also conditioned medium of KPL-4 cells contain high
