KASH domain

[KASH domains]

This domain is named after proteins in which it was observed first (klarsicht, ANC-1 [anchorage 1], SYNE [synaptic nuclear envelope protein]. Proteins with a KASH domain form an evolutionarily conserved protein family and function primarily as exclusive outer nuclear membrane scaffolds that associate with the cytoskeleton, the centrosome and the motor protein apparatus.

Proteins containing a KASH domain interact with proteins containing a SUN domain. These complexes link the nucleus with cytoplasmic elements, are important for the integrity of the nuclear envelope, and also act as cargo-specific adaptors that link organelles to the cytoskeleton and also regulate developmentally specific organelle movements (Schneider et al, 2008; Starr and Fischer, 2005; Wilhelmsen et al, 2006).
