Japanese Encephalitis Virus NS5 protein

This viral nonstructural protein is encoded in the genome of Japanese Encephalitis Virus (for overview see: Lindenbach BD and Rice CM, 2003). NS5 protein is a major component of the viral RNA replicase complex associated with the 3' noncoding region of genomic RNA in the initiation of viral replication (Chen CJ et al, 1997).

The viral protein plays a role in immune evasion. NS5 protein is a potent interferon antagonist. It readily blocks JAK-STAT signaling induced by IFN-alpha, preventing nuclear translocation of the signal transducer STAT1 as well as phosphorylation of TYK2 and STAT1.
