Also: ISM1 [isthmin-1]. Xenopus laevis isthmin encodes a secreted protein of 449 amino acids containing one copy of the thrombospondin type 1 repeat. Xenopus laevis isthmin is strongly expressed maternally in the Xenopus egg and shows zygotic expression in the ventral blastopore lip, notochord, and midbrain-hindbrain boundary. It is expressed also in neural crest, ear vesicle, and developing blood islands. Xenopus laevis isthmin is co-expressed with FGF8 at multiple sites including the midbrain-hindbrain boundary (Pera et al, 2002). The function of the encoded 60 kDa protein is not known.
