Innate immunity defense peptides MiniCOPE Dictionary

The Innate immunity defense peptides MiniCOPE Dictionary is one of several MiniCOPE Dictionaries within COPE.

This dictionary contains entries directly or indirectly bearing on factors with antibiotic activities that are secreted by a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate cell types, as well as other proteins that play a role in innate immunity. The are also some excursions into the plant world.

Many of these proteins are part of humoral immune responses to invasion by micro-organisms (Andreu and Rivas, 1998; Bulet et al, 1999; Tossi and Sandri, 2002; Hancock et al, 2006) and play an important role in disease (Agerberth and Gudmundsson, 2006). Some of these peptides have been shown also to play an immunomodulatory role (Bowdish et al, 2006; Bowdish et al, 2005) and are active against a variety of cancer cell types (Papo and Shai, 2005).

These peptides show a great diversity with respect to their primary and secondary structures, their spectra of antimicrobial activities and their potency, their effects on host cells, and also their inducibility. Detailed studies have allowed these peptides to be grouped into larger families with individual members related to one another by sequence or structure. Members of the largest and most widespread class of cytolytic antimicrobial peptides, for example, assume an amphipathic, alpha-helical conformation that permits efficient interaction with biological membranes (Zelezetsky and Tossi, 2006; Brown and Hancock, 2006).

Knowledge about structure-activity relationships is being applied to the design of antimicrobial peptide variants with improved activities and therapeutic potentials. Some of them are currently under development for topical application and various systemic infections (Jenssen et al, 2006; Pukala et al, 2006; Yount and Yeaman, 2006; Zhang and Falla, 2006).
