also: I blood group system. This blood group system consists of two structurally related poly-N-acetyllactosamine carbohydrate antigens termed I antigen and i-antigen (I(-) phenotype).
The poly-N-acetyllactosamines consist of repeating N-acetyllactosamine disaccharide units (LacNAc; Galβ1-4GlcNAc, where Gal is D-galactose and GlcNAc is N-acetyl-D-glucosamine). The i-antigen consists of linear chains, whereas the I antigen consists of branched chains. The linear i-antigen is expressed abundantly on the surface of embryonic red blood cells and on red blood cells during times of altered erythropoiesis.
