this enzyme has been identified in the culture supernatant of human fibroblasts. It converts a 77 amino acid precursor form of IL8 into a 72 amino acid form by removing N-terminal amino acids to produce a form of IL8 that is more potent than the longer form in a neutrophil chemotaxis assay. The enzyme has been shown to be identical with the lysosomal cysteine proteinase cathepsin L (Ohashi et al, 2003)
