[Insulin-like growth factor-3] This protein (72 amino acids), which has been identified in Xenopus laevis, is related to mammalian IGF-1 and IGF-2 and belong to the IGF family. IGF-3 is expressed in the dorsal midline during gastrulation and neurulation in a pattern overlapping with IGFBP5. IGF-3 is expressed strongly in the prospective ventral forebrain region of the anterior neural plate and participates in neural and head induction (Pera et al, 2001).
