This cell type, identified by Bao et al (2014) in mice after challenge with Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, vesicular stomatitis virus and Toll-like receptor ligands, constitutes an inducible subpopulation of B-cells characterized by high expression of CD11a and FCGR3 (CD16) and the production of high levels of IFN-gamma.
This subpopulation of B-cells can promote macrophage activation via generating IFN-gamma, thereby facilitating the innate immune response against intracellular bacterial infection. Dendritic cells are essential for the inducible generation of these innate B-cells
