abbr. gamma-IMCs. These cells, which have the morphology of ring cells, originated from bone marrow precursor-like cells. They are shown to be functionally and phenotypically distinct from myeloid-derived suppressor cells. The cells produce IFN-gamma, depend on GM-CSF, and have been shown to play a protective role against severe invasive group A Streptococcus infections, and possibly compensate for neutropenia. These cells express monocyte and granulocyte markers, and also produce nitric oxide. The adoptive transfer of these cells ameliorates infection in wild-type and IFN-gamma deficient mice. The cells
