[HTLV-1 P13 II protein] This protein (87 amino acids) is encoded by open reading frame II in the pX region located between env gene and the 3′ long terminal repeat (LTR) in the genome of Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). p13II corresponds to the carboxy-terminal 87 amino acids of p30II encoded by the same reading frame and is produced from a singly spliced mRNA that lacks the Tax initiator codon (Koralnik et al, 1992).
p13(II) is found occasionally as a nuclear protein but localizes predominantly to mitochondria (Ciminale et al, 1999). p13II is dispensable for infection and immortalization of primary human and rabbit lymphocytes
