Histone H4 is a core component of nucleosomes that compact DNA into chromatin (DeLange and Smith, 1971). Histone H4 constitutes a multigene family of replication-dependent histones, which are expressed mainly during S phase, and replication-independent histones, or replacement variant histones, which are expressed throughout the cell cycle. All human and mouse H4 histone genes encode the same protein (see: Marzluff et al (2002) for overview). Apart from its role in chromatin, Histone H4 has other functions and thus can be regarded as a member of a growing group of proteins referred to as moonlighting proteins.
