Histidyl-tRNA synthetase, known also as Histidine-tRNA Ligase (approved gene symbol: HARS) is an enzyme (EC6.1.1.21 in the enzyme nomenclature catalogue) that catalyzes the esterification of histidine to its cognate tRNA, which is an early step in protein biosynthesis (Freist et al, 1999). The genomic organization and function of the human gene have been described (Tsui and Siminovitch, 1987; O'Hanlon and Miller; 2002). Blechynden et al (1996) have cloned and sequenced the murine gene.
