Heligmosomoides polygyrus TGF-beta mimic

abbr. Hp-TGM. This protein is encoded in the genome of the mouse helminth parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus. The parasite protein has no homology with mammalian TGF-beta or other members of the TGF-beta family, but is a member of the complement control protein superfamily. The protein replicates the biological and functional properties of TGF-beta, including binding to mammalian TGF-beta receptors and inducing mouse and human Foxp3+ immunosuppressive regulatory T-cells to promote immune evasion.
