[Helicase with 2 CARD domains] This protein has been identified by Kovacsovics et al (2002). Helicard is a widely expressed helicase which contains two N-terminal CARD domains and a C-terminal helicase domain. The protein is cleaved by caspases following onset of cell death by apoptosis. This separates the CARD domain containing part of the protein, which remains in the cytoplasm, from the other part containing the helicase domain, which localizes to the nucleus. Helicard accelerates FAS ligand mediated DNA degradation.
