This toxin is produced by various isolates of Haemophilus ducreyi, the etiologic agent of the sexually transmitted disease chancroid, and various other bacterial species (see: CDT). The toxin is cytolethal to cultured human epithelial-like cells, human keratinocytes, HeLa cells, HEp-2 cells, Jurkat cells hamster fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and other human epithelial cells in vitro and causes progressive cell distention and cytotoxicity. This is a three-component toxin that induces the irreversible arrest of the mammalian cell cycle in the G2 phase
