[Human T-cell leukemia virus type-1 p13 protein] The p13 protein of HTLV-1 mediates an inward K(+) current in isolated mitochondria that leads to mitochondrial swelling, depolarization, increased respiratory chain activity and reactive oxygen species production. These effects trigger the opening of the permeability transition pore, and p13 acts as a sensitizer to selected stimuli causing apoptosis. The protein shares some structural and functional features with viroporins but it is not known whether the protein also forms membrane channels.
