The cell line HSG has been established from a human sub-mandibular gland from a 54 year old male patient.
HSG-S8 is a tumorigenic HSG subclone that can proliferate in a serum-free culture. Transplantation of HSG cells into nude mice induces formation of cartilage or bone, which is caused by the secretion of BMP2, which is found also in the conditioned medium of these cells. Retinoic acid enhances expression of BMP2 in this subline.
HSGc is a non-metastasizing cell clone that secretes much less EGF into the conditioned medium than the parent cell line.
