HSCO

[hepatoma subtracted-cDNA library clone one] HSCO has been identified by Higashitsuji et al (2002) as a nuclear-cytoplasmic shuttling protein that binds to NF-kappa-B, inhibits its activity, and inhibits cell death by apoptosis. HSCO mRNA has been found to be overexpressed in 20 of 30 hepatocellular carcinomas analyzed. Overexpression of HSCO inhibits caspase-9 activation and apoptosis induced by DNA damaging agents, while it augments cell death by apoptosis induced by TNF-alpha. HSCO also abrogates apoptosis induced by p53. Oue et al (2004) have reported overexpression of HSCO in 52 % of 46 gastric carcinomas.
