HP (2-20) (AKKVFKRLEKLFSKIQNDK) is a peptide from Helicobacter pylori, the bacterial pathogen associated with gastritis and peptic ulcers. HP (2-20) has been shown to be derived from the N-terminus sequence of Helicobacter pylori RPL1 [ribosomal protein L1]. The peptide, which shows high similarity with antibiotic peptides known as cecropins, has been identified by Pütsep et al (1999, 1999) together with Hp(2-13) and Hp(2-38). All three peptides exert antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative Escherichia coli strain D21 and the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus megaterium strain Bm11.
