[heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C] The protein encoded by the HNRNPC is part of a large (more than 20 proteins) nuclear ribonucleoprotein complex in eukaryotic cells containing nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and functions as a general pre-RNA-binding protein. The protein exists in 2 splice variants (C1 and C2) differing by a 13 amino acid insert (Burd et al, 1989; Merrill et al, 1989) and, therefore, the protein is being referred to also as hnRNP C1/C2 [heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C1/C2].
Hamilton et al (1993) have shown that HNRNPC binds to AU-rich elements found in the 3' untranslated regions of mRNA known to have a short half-life. Chen et al (2006) have shown HNRNPC to be a binding protein for hormone response elements
