HIMS-defensin

The cDNA for this protein of 79 amino acids with characteristics of defensin has been cloned by Zheng et al (2012) from the male accessory glands of the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis. HlMS-defensin is most likely expressed exclusively in male ticks, is expressed predominately in the male accessory gland, and is up-regulated during blood feeding. HIMS defensin is an antimicrobial peptide and probably protects the reproductive tract against microbial infections.

For other proteins/peptides with functions in innate immunity and/or antimicrobial activities see also: Innate immunity and defense peptides Dictionary.
