[Human cytomegalovirus UL38 protein] This protein (331 amino acids), known also as pUL38, is the product of an immediate early gene encoded by the UL38 open reading frame in the genome of human cytomegalovirus (Yu et al, 2002). The protein is critical for successful HCMV infection (Terhune et al, 2007) and has been implicated in cell death by apoptosis. Terhune et al (2007) have reported that a mutant virus lacking HCMV UL38 induces host cell apoptosis.
