abbr. GH2. The protein is known also as Growth hormone variant (abbr. GHV; also: HGH-V protein) (Seeburg, 1982; Igout et al, 1988), or GHL [growth hormone-like] (Owerbach et al, 1980). The protein is identical with placental growth hormone (Frankenne et al, 1987). Liebhaber et al (1989) have reported that the placental form of growth hormone is expressed specifically in syncytiotrophoblasts. The GHV gene differs from the growth hormone gene by the presence of mutations that affect splicing (Chen et al, 1989; MacLeod et al, 1991) and gives rise to alternatively spliced transcripts, termed GHV2
