This protein is a member of the family of serine proteases known as granzymes. The approved gene symbol is GZMD. The cDNA has been cloned by Jenne et al (1988). A human equivalent for this enzyme does not seem to exist (Jenne et al, 1989). The enzyme is being referred to also as CTLA-5 [cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen 5] or CCP5 [Cytotoxic cell protease-5].
Yokoi et al (1999) have reported that granzyme D is expressed selectively in functional hematopoietic stromal lines and primary stromal cells. The enzyme appears to be important for the ability of stromal cell lines to support the growth of pre-T-lymphoma
