This peptide with the sequence FGFLPIYRRPASamide has been isolated from the skin of the frog Rana rugosa. It causes mast cell degranulation and liberates histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells (Nakajima and Yasuhara, 1977). The peptide is weakly active as an antimicrobial peptide against Staphylococcus aureus and at high concentrations induces potassium ion efflux from mast cells and bacterial cells (Nakao et al, 2011). Lechago et al (1984) have localized granuliberin within nerve cell bodies and fibers with variable numbers of small cytoplasmic neurosecretory granules in different regions of the brain of Rana pipiens.
